Fylde 7 Pendle 9

Fylde: Betty (3), Ken (5), Leonard (7) & Ruth (8)
Pendle: Ron Welch (2˝), Peter Dewhurst (4) , Paul Dowdall (9) & Garry Wilson (10)

Fylde new-comer Ruth Rendle flanked by Pendle new boys Garry Wilson and Paul Dowdall

The last match of the season started in coldish conditions but finished in bright sunshine. The match sported two “first timers” – Ruth playing for Fylde and Garry Wilson playing for Pendle. Pendle also fielded comparative newcomer Paul Dowdall and it was good to see some new association players coming through for Pendle. The first round finished all square at 2 – 2 with wins for Ruth and Leonard. Paul Dowdall was proving a formidable opponent beating Betty 14 – 0 without Betty taking croquet. In round two Leonard vs Peter was a close game with Peter eventually winning the golden hoop. Ruth was the only winner for Fylde and so the score was 5 – 3 at lunch. After lunch there were wins for Leonard and Ken in round three. Ruth was to suffer her only loss of the day losing 3 – 14 to Paul. The final round again split the honours even with wins for Ruth and Ken. Congratulations to Ruth on a wonderful performance in her maiden match sorry we didn’t win it for you!

Chester 11 Fylde 5

Chester: John Dawson (3.5) Dennis Holman (6) Mervyn Dexter (8) Di Chandler (10)
Fylde: Leonard Ainsworth (7) Geoffrey Lipshaw (10) Catherine Bass (10) (c) Philip Bass (10)

Leonard provided the only win from the first round with a strong 10-12 victory over Mervyn. However, Geoffrey put up a valiant effort against Di and just missed out on Golden Hoop after time. In the second round, Dennis had reminded Catherine he had beaten her before. He won the toss and decreed Catherine go second. From the classic opening - two balls on the boundary and one in the centre - and using three bisques Catherine took Black to peg - as she had been practising earlier in the week, following Lee's coaching. Dennis didn't seem very happy about this and immediately queried Catherine's Handicap. Flattered by this, she used the other three bisques during the game and, helped by Dennis' overhitting on croquet shots, took the game 2-14. Despite a brilliant trick shot from Philip, turning three corner touching balls into a worm and successfully rushing the pivot ball to the centre, he was unable to beat John who was on top form. Leonard came close to beating Di but lost out by just one hoop 6-5. In the next round, the score between Philip and Mervyn was 6-6 at time. Mervyn, with a ball in the jaws, had a bisque remaining and there was debate about whether he could use it or not. John was called to assist (trained Assistant Referee) and confirmed that bisques could not be used until extended play had finished. If there was still a draw, then another turn would begin and bisques came back into play. However, Philip scored the next hoop in extended time and took the game. Catherine just pipped Di to win 6-7. Geoffrey put up a good fight against John, winning 7 hoops but John was performing strongly on the day - the only player to win all his games. Lenoard's dogged determination took his game to full time against Dennis, denying Dennis any chance of pegging out, losing by just four hoops. By the final round, the score was 8-4, so the match was not over. Catherine got Black round and ran Hoop 5. However, the balls weren't in quite the right places! So, she tried to roll Black and Blue up to Hoop 6. Black fell a long way short and a couple of feet to the right of the peg. Mervyn was already rising from his seat, when without fully aiming, Catherine risked a "Golf" shot at the hoop, being some way away from the opponents balls - and Black sailed through! This game was first to finish, Fylde winning 2-14. So, with the score at 8-5, a draw was still possible but the other three Home players proved too strong for the visitors.

Bowdon 10 Fylde 6

Bowdon: Iman van den Bout, Adam Swinton, Louise Cheyne, Brian Rust.
Fylde: Betty Bates , Philip Bass , Geoffrey lipshaw , Catherine Bass.

The beautifully manicured lawns at Bowdon always play as if playing on glass so the addition of damp weather to slow things down was a welcome start to Fylde. However, the sun came out and dried the lawns which meant the Fylde contingent struggled to get the pace correct, with balls running a further 3 feet further than expected. Fylde battled up to lunch squaring the matches at 4 - 4 with two wins from Betty and a new stance from Catherine proving beneficial, who also had two wins. In the afternoon there were some fabulous 20 yard hit ins from Geoffrey but the pace of the lawns proved to get the better of him around the hoops. A further win was added to Fylde from Philip who battled on to win a game on the golden hoop. Another win from Betty made the total score 10-6 in favour of Bowdon. No doubt we will hear more of Bowdon's 14 year old wonder boy Adam who is being coached successfully on triple peels, let's hope he discovers girls before Fylde play him again!

Fylde 7 llanfairfechan 9

Fylde: Betty Bates 3.5, Ian Theakstone 4, Philip Bass 9, Catherine Bass 10
Llanfairfechan: Georgina Llewllyn 3, Jack Pattendale 4, Richard Williams 4, Liz Bridges 7

With the weather forecasted to be dire, we expected the worst which duly happened. Llanfairfecan fielded a strong side bringing the big guns plus a newcomer Richard, who showed the form he had years before. The 1st round was a single win by Philip but the 2nd round was a single loss by Philip so lunchtime score was an even 4 all. Now the rain came and stayed, a lonely win from Betty in round 3 saw Fylde down to -2. Round 4 gave wins Ian and Catherine so the final score was 7-9 to the Welsh team which was a good effort against the champs. Well done to Catherine with 2 wins and staying on to the end even though she was drenched down to her kn____kers she says.

BURY: Bob Whittle 10, Maureen Whittle 10, Len Ferkin 10, Colleen Ferkin 10.
FYLDE: Betty Bates 3.5, Ian Theakstone 5, Ken Harper 5, Leonard Ainsworth 8.

Arrived to play our 1st match on a fine summers day but very blustery. Bury fielded a high bisque side so we were down on our bisque availability. Round 1 wins by Betty and Leonard and 2nd round wins by Ken Ian and Leonard saw Fylde 5-3 up at lunch. After a salad lunch wins by Leonard Ian and Betty with a very tight finish br Ian 14-13 against Bob. The final round saw 3 wins from Bury but a win from Ian caused a drop in his handicap to 4, no more bisques for him !!.
